The entire city of Kano woke up under extreme heat that day despite the rainy season already approaching.
People continued praying for rain because several nearby states and villages had already started receiving heavy rainfall while Kano remained dry.
Many times dark clouds gathered strongly across the sky as though rain would finally fall, but within moments the clouds disappeared and the sun returned brightly.
The situation had become both frustrating and frightening for many residents.
The Beauty of Rain in Kano
Whenever Allah finally blessed the city with rainfall, Kano transformed beautifully.
The weather became cool and peaceful.
The smell of wet soil spread everywhere while gentle wind carried the fresh scent through the streets and homes.
Farmers quickly returned to their farms while Islamic scholars and residents continued praying for a successful farming season and national progress.
Despite the unbearable heat that afternoon, business activities across Kano never stopped.
Men and women continued working hard to earn a living.
That hardworking spirit was one of the things many people admired deeply about the people of Kano.
Young and old alike always searched for ways to transform little money into something greater through honest effort.
Hajiya Kaltume’s Hustle
Inside one of the houses located in Yakasai area lived Hajiya Kaltume, a woman around fifty-five years old.
She sat inside her small room arranging products for her business.
In front of her were:
- Seasoning cubes
- Sugar
- Salt
- Detergents
- Ground spices
- Peanuts
- Perfume mixtures
- Food ingredients packed inside bottles and nylons
Although her son was successful, she still believed strongly in working for herself.
Doctor Haseeb Returns Home
Around 12:30 PM, her eldest son Doctor Haseeb entered the house after greeting her respectfully.
The moment she saw his face, she immediately noticed his mood was terrible.
Haseeb himself was naturally serious and rarely smiled, but this time his expression looked heavier than usual.
He sat down quietly staring deeply into his palms before releasing a tired sigh.
A mother always understands her child better than anyone else.
Hajiya Kaltume looked directly at him and asked:
“My son, is something bothering you?”
He quickly shook his head.
“Everything is fine. I only rushed over because of the message you left for me.”
Before answering him, she calmly finished tying several nylon packages of salt.
That action immediately annoyed Haseeb.
Unable to remain silent anymore, he finally said:
“Hajiya, why do you continue stressing yourself like this?”
“Why are you still doing all these small business activities?”

A Mother’s Wisdom
Hajiya Kaltume looked at him quietly before replying:
“Since childhood, my parents never raised me to depend completely on others.”
“I learned the importance of hard work and independence very early.”
“Money has value whether little or much.”
“That is why I will never stop working as long as I still have strength.”
Her words left Haseeb silent for a while.
The Hidden Burden
Later that evening around 5 PM, Doctor Haseeb lay alone inside his bedroom completely disturbed by thoughts concerning his younger siblings.
He turned restlessly from one side of the bed to another unable to find peace.
Suddenly, the bedroom door opened slowly.
His wife entered carrying a tray containing chilled pineapple juice and sliced fruits.
She stopped beside him and offered him the drink gently.
Instead of drinking immediately, Haseeb sat upright and silently stirred the ice cubes floating inside the juice.
His wife observed him carefully because after six years of marriage she understood his moods deeply.
Softly, she touched his shoulder and asked:
“Can I ask the doctor something?”
Haseeb slowly looked at her while rubbing his forehead with two fingers, a habit she recognized whenever he was deeply troubled.
After taking a sip from the juice, he finally answered:
“What is it?”
She replied softly:
“You haven’t looked okay since you came back home. What exactly is troubling you?”
