Suhail suddenly became extremely upset.
His voice was so loud and serious that both Hajja and I became frightened.
“Hajja, how did you enter my room? Did I give you permission?” he demanded.
Hajja answered him respectfully.
“Alhaji, I wasn’t the one who arranged the room. Hajiya did.”
He quickly asked, “Which Hajiya?”
“Lilla. Your wife. She was the one who arranged everything.”
Suhail stared in surprise.
He could hardly believe that someone as young and playful as Lilla could arrange the room so neatly.
He looked at me for a moment before turning around and returning to his room.
When he finished what he was doing upstairs, he came downstairs and went straight to the dining area.
He ate his meal, but even after he finished, he still hadn’t seen me.
He went to Hajja.
“Where is Lilla?”
“She’s outside,” Hajja replied.
Suhail immediately walked into the compound to see what I was doing.
Back in our village, I was used to swimming in the river, so I already knew how to swim very well.
I had discovered the swimming pool in the compound and was happily swimming from one side to another like a little fish.
Whenever I reached the edge, I would jump back into the water excitedly.
Suhail stood watching me.
He was amazed by how energetic and mischievous I could be.
He walked closer to the swimming pool.
“Lilla, you’ve been swimming long enough. Come out. I want to use the pool.”
He turned around and went back inside.
A few minutes later, he returned ready to swim, with his phone in his hand.
I looked at him briefly before turning my face away.
He immediately realized that I had no intention of leaving the water.
“Didn’t I tell you to come out?” he asked.
I stared directly at him, twisted my mouth and gave him an annoyed look.
“So now you’re going to be stubborn with me?” he asked.
I splashed the water playfully and made another funny face before disappearing beneath the surface again.
For a moment, Suhail almost laughed.
But he quickly controlled himself and forced his face to become serious.
Then I saw him entering the pool.
Immediately, fear entered my heart.
I tried to swim toward the other side so that I could escape from him.
But he caught up with me.
I escaped his grip once, and we moved around in the water while I continued laughing.
Eventually, however, he caught me again.
His rough attempt to stop my mischief frightened me badly, and by the time he brought me out of the pool, I was coughing and crying.
He picked up his phone and began pressing some buttons.
From the way he spoke when the call connected, I immediately knew it was Momi.
She asked where Lilla was.
“She’s here,” Suhail replied. “We’re at the swimming pool.”
Momi sounded delighted.
Then Suhail held the phone toward me.
“Here. Speak to Momi.”
I happily collected it.
Momi and I exchanged greetings, and she gave me more advice.
Later, Suhail called Dady as well and allowed me to speak with him.
I greeted him happily.
After that, Suhail called Mai Gari, and I also exchanged greetings with him.
Finally, I looked at Suhail.
“Yaya, please, what about Kawu, Umma and Aunty Amina?”
He looked at me impatiently.
“Do you even have their phone numbers?”
“Yes!” I answered immediately.
I hurried to bring out a small piece of paper on which Aunty Amina had written her number and Kawu’s number.
I handed it to him with a huge smile.
Suhail collected the paper while giving me one of his usual looks.
He dialled the number.
Fortunately, Kawu answered.
“Hello, who is this?”
I was amazed by how warmly and respectfully Suhail greeted him.
He asked whether Kawu was at home and requested to speak with Umma.
When Umma came to the phone, Suhail greeted her with great respect.
They even chatted briefly.
“Where is our Aunty?” Suhail asked.
Umma was delighted by the way he spoke.
They thanked him and eventually connected him with Amina.
Suhail and Amina also greeted each other and spoke for a while.
By then, I had become impatient because I desperately wanted the phone.
Eventually, he handed it to me.
I spoke with Umma, Kawu and Amina.
I talked as though I never wanted the conversation to end.
Finally, Suhail collected the phone and ended the call.
By then, a few tears had escaped from my eyes.
Hearing the voices of my family had made me emotional.
Suhail led me into the sitting room and made me sit down.
Pointing at me, he warned:
“Don’t let me see you swimming around the compound dressed improperly again. I’ll buy you proper swimming clothes, and those are what you’ll use.”
I pushed out my lips stubbornly.
“Okay, okay, okay. I’m not a baby.”
My response annoyed him.
“Continue behaving like this and you’ll see what happens in this house.”
He hissed and walked away.
I continued crying afterward.
But it wasn’t really because of Suhail.
What affected me was hearing the voices of my family.
Hajja tried to comfort me until she became tired.
Later, Suhail returned and firmly ordered me to get properly dressed.
His seriousness immediately made me stop arguing and hurry into my room.
I climbed onto the bed, wrapped myself in the blanket and eventually fell asleep.
I slept for so long that I didn’t even realize that evening had passed.
Suddenly, the door opened.
When I opened my eyes, I saw Suhail standing there.
“Why don’t you listen, Lilla?” he asked.
“I’m responsible for your upbringing, yet you’re sleeping through the evening. You haven’t prayed Asr, Maghrib, and now it is already Isha.”
I immediately jumped down from the bed.
Fear entered my heart because I thought he was going to punish me again.
“Wallahi, I’ll get ready. Please forgive me, Yaya,” I pleaded.
He ordered me to clean up, perform ablution and prepare for prayer.
I quickly obeyed.
Afterward, Suhail made another decision.
“From today, I want to keep a closer eye on you. You’ll sleep nearby so that I can make sure you’re following a proper routine.”
He shook his head.
“Your toys and everyday things can remain in your room, but your behaviour needs supervision.”
He hissed and walked away.
I muttered quietly to myself:
“Always trouble, always shouting. As long as you’re going to buy me what I want and put me in school, I don’t care.”
After performing my prayers and eating, I returned to playing.
Suhail hardly noticed what I was doing because he was busy working on his computer.
At around 10:00 p.m., he finally looked at me.
“Get up. It’s time to sleep.”
His expression showed that he wasn’t joking.
I quietly gathered my things, brushed my teeth, changed into my night clothes and prepared for bed.
I also used the perfume Momi had given me.
Then I went to the room where Suhail had told me to sleep.
Instead of using the place he had originally indicated, I climbed onto a comfortable chair that looked almost like a small bed.
Before long, I fell asleep.

It was around eleven o’clock when Suhail finally finished his work.
He switched everything off and came upstairs.
He found me fast asleep on the chair.
He hissed quietly, picked up a beautiful white blanket and covered me with it before going to sleep.
Later in the night, I suddenly began screaming in my sleep.
Suhail woke up in shock.
For a moment, he had even forgotten that someone else was sleeping nearby.
He switched on the light.
To his surprise, I was still completely asleep despite the strange things I was saying.
He tried to wake me.
I still didn’t respond properly.
My eyes remained closed as I continued mumbling nonsense in my sleep.
Eventually, he managed to wake me.
I opened my eyes in confusion and immediately began crying.
“Lilla, don’t you pray before sleeping?” he asked sharply. “What kind of sleep is this?”
I answered sleepily through my tears:
“How can I have sense? I’m only a little girl.”
I could barely stand straight.
The sight almost made him laugh, although he tried to hide it.
My hair was completely scattered, and I was sweating.
“Go back to sleep properly,” he finally said.
I immediately obeyed.
During the night, I moved around constantly in my sleep.
By dawn, Suhail woke for ablution and discovered that I had occupied far more space than expected.
He stared in disbelief before moving me back toward my side.
The movement woke me.
He went to perform ablution, and I also got up and prepared for prayer.
After praying, Suhail sat reciting his morning adhkar.
I did a little of mine before becoming sleepy again.
When I tried to return to sleep, he stopped me.
“No. You’re too restless when you sleep. You need to learn to sleep properly.”
I immediately complained.
“Yaya, please. It’s cold.”
He ignored me.
Later that morning, by around 8:30, Suhail was already completely dressed.
He wore a spotless white jalabiya.
His thick hair had been neatly arranged, and he smelled strongly of expensive perfume.
When he finished getting ready, he woke me.
“Get up. Sleeping time is over. Go and take your bath. Hurry up. I’ll be waiting for you in the dining room.”
I quickly prepared myself.
When I came downstairs, I was wearing an expensive lace outfit consisting of a blouse and skirt.
I rushed down happily.
Suhail immediately noticed.
“Hmm. So even today you still can’t walk calmly? If I catch you running around this house again, you’ll see.”
I widened my eyes and pushed out my lips.
“Okay. Sorry.”
He ignored my expression and continued eating.
Then he asked:
“Don’t you know how to greet people in the morning? Or don’t people greet each other in your village?”
I immediately greeted him respectfully.
He then told me:
“Go and greet Hajja too. She’s older than you.”
I quickly went to greet her before returning.
Then Suhail said:
“Your food is there. Eat quickly. We’re going to a school so that I can register you.”
My face immediately brightened.
I was extremely happy when I heard that I would be attending school.
I hurried through breakfast.
Then I returned to my room and collected a small scarf matching my clothes.
I also put on a pair of shoes that made a noticeable sound whenever I walked because I liked hearing them.
As soon as I came out, Suhail heard them.
Without even looking at me, he simply said:
“Let’s go.”
He took me to a beautiful private school close to the house.
It was so near that I could even walk there.
I was placed in SS1 and given a school uniform and the other necessary items.
I was told that classes would begin in about two weeks after the holiday.
By then, I had already spent about one week in Suhail’s house.
Surprisingly, the two of us had started becoming accustomed to each other’s personalities.
One thing I liked about Suhail was that he generally didn’t interfere unnecessarily in what another person was doing.
His attitude was simple: don’t disturb him and he wouldn’t disturb you.
Sometimes I would sit and tell him stories.
Some made him smile, while others earned me another lecture.
He also enrolled me in an Islamiyya school behind our house.
I attended every evening.
Some days, Suhail even brought me ice cream and snacks.
But whenever I misbehaved, I still knew he would correct me.
Eventually, regular school resumed.
I reduced my constant playing a little.
Suhail began helping me with my school assignments and sometimes with my Islamiyya work as well.
Momi later came to visit with Zara.
She was clearly delighted to see that I was gradually settling into the house.
A month passed.
By then, I had started noticing some of the normal changes associated with growing up.
Because I didn’t understand what was happening, the changes worried me.
One day, while entering Suhail’s room to ask for help with an assignment, I accidentally hurt myself against the door and began crying.
Suhail looked up from his laptop.
“What’s wrong with you now, Lilla?”
I tearfully explained that I had noticed some painful physical changes and didn’t understand what they meant.
Suhail realized that they were simply part of growing up.
He reassured me that I was fine and told me not to panic.
He also explained that as I grew older, I needed to become more conscious of privacy and personal boundaries.
I listened carefully and nodded.
Afterward, we returned to the assignment.
That night, I prepared for bed and returned to the room.
Suhail was already lying down and almost asleep.
But when he looked toward the chair where I normally sat, he saw tears running down my face.
He sighed.
“What is it again, Lilla? You should be sleeping.”
Then he looked at me once more.
“Come here.”
I got up from the chair and walked toward him, still wiping away my tears…
