Victoria Roshchyna

Victoria Roshchyna was a Ukrainian investigative journalist who reported for the independent news outlet Ukrainska Pravda and its investigative unit, Slidstvo.Info. Her work focused on documenting the war in Ukraine, including alleged Russian war crimes and the impact of the conflict on civilians.

According to her employer, Ukrainska Pravda, Roshchyna was last in contact with her editors in August 2023 after traveling to Russian-occupied territory in southeastern Ukraine. The publication stated she was subsequently detained by Russian forces. On October 19, 2024, Ukrainska Pravda confirmed her death in Russian custody, citing information from Ukrainian military intelligence.

The death occurred within the context of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022. The conflict has seen numerous journalists killed, wounded, detained, or missing while reporting from front-line areas and occupied territories.

The Ukrainian government and media advocacy groups, including the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, condemned her death and called for an investigation. Russian authorities had not publicly commented on her case prior to the death announcement by Ukrainian sources.
