Their Story
Mantas Kvedaravicius was a Lithuanian filmmaker and anthropologist known for his immersive, long-form documentary work. He gained international recognition for his 2016 film 'Mariupolis', which chronicled the lives of civilians in the Ukrainian port city during the conflict that began in 2014. His method involved embedding himself for extended periods to document the human impact of war.
In late March 2022, Kvedaravicius re-entered Mariupol, which was under a heavy siege by Russian forces, to film a sequel. According to reports from colleagues and Ukrainian officials, he was detained at a checkpoint by Russian troops. His body was reportedly recovered on April 2, 2022, in the city. The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed his death.
The battle for Mariupol was a major military engagement in the initial phase of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022. The city, a strategic port on the Sea of Azov, endured weeks of intense bombardment that caused widespread destruction and a severe humanitarian crisis.
Kvedaravicius's death was condemned by international press freedom organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders. The Lithuanian government called for an international investigation. Colleagues and film festivals worldwide paid tribute to his dedication to bearing witness.
His final film, 'Mariupolis 2', was completed posthumously from his footage and premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. It stands as a document of civilian life and resilience during the siege, continuing his focus on the personal stories within zones of conflict.
