Their Story
Oksana Baulina was a Russian journalist who had previously worked for the anti-corruption foundation of opposition figure Alexei Navalny. Following the Russian government's designation of Navalny's organizations as extremist in 2021, Baulina left Russia and began working as a correspondent for the Latvia-based investigative outlet The Insider.
On March 23, 2022, Baulina was in the Podil district of Kyiv filming the aftermath of a Russian shelling attack on a shopping center. According to reports from The Insider and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), she and her team were caught in a subsequent strike. Baulina was killed, and two other individuals, including a local man serving as a fixer, were reportedly wounded.
Her death occurred during the first month of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, a period marked by intense fighting for control of the capital, Kyiv. The war has been one of the deadliest for journalists in recent decades, with reporters operating in areas under frequent artillery and aerial bombardment.
The Insider confirmed her death and stated she was on assignment for the outlet. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) later classified her killing as a confirmed work-related death. Russian authorities did not publicly comment on the incident.
Baulina is remembered by colleagues as a dedicated reporter committed to documenting the human cost of the conflict. Her death underscored the extreme risks faced by journalists covering the war in Ukraine.
