Their Story
Fr?d?ric Leclerc-Imhoff, 32, was a video journalist for the French television news channel BFM TV. He had been working for the network since 2018, primarily covering social and economic affairs before being assigned to report on the war in Ukraine.
On May 30, 2022, Leclerc-Imhoff was traveling in an armored vehicle marked 'Press' as part of a humanitarian evacuation convoy near the city of Sievierodonetsk in the Luhansk region. According to reports from French officials and his employer, the vehicle was struck by shrapnel from a Russian airstrike. He was fatally wounded.
Sievierodonetsk was the focal point of intense fighting in eastern Ukraine in the spring of 2022. Russian forces were conducting a major offensive to capture the city, which was one of the last major urban centers in the Luhansk region held by Ukraine at the time.
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the journalist's death, stating Leclerc-Imhoff was in Ukraine 'to show the reality of the war.' BFM TV said he was 'on a mission' to cover civilian evacuations. The Committee to Protect Journalists documented his death as work-related.
His death brought the number of journalists killed while covering the war to at least eight within its first four months. The French foreign ministry stated his work 'reminds us of the necessity of those who embody the freedom of the press, in Ukraine and everywhere.'
