Pierre Zakrzewski
Pierre Zakrzewski was an Irish journalist and cameraman for Fox News. He was killed on March 14, 2022, while reporting from Horenka, Ukraine.
Their Story
Pierre Zakrzewski was a veteran freelance cameraman and field producer for Fox News Channel. Born in 1964, he had covered numerous international conflicts over two decades, including assignments in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. Colleagues described him as a courageous and experienced professional dedicated to frontline reporting.
On March 14, 2022, Zakrzewski was traveling in a vehicle with Fox News correspondent Benjamin Hall and Ukrainian journalist Oleksandra Kuvshynova near the village of Horenka, northwest of Kyiv. The vehicle came under fire, reportedly from Russian forces. Zakrzewski and Kuvshynova were killed. Hall was severely injured.
His death occurred during the initial, large-scale invasion phase of the Russo-Ukrainian War. In early March 2022, Russian forces were attempting to encircle the capital, Kyiv, leading to intense fighting in suburbs like Horenka and Irpin. The area was a active combat zone.
The Committee to Protect Journalists confirmed his death as work-related. Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott announced his death, calling him a 'beloved' and 'brave' member of their team. Tributes from colleagues highlighted his professionalism and mentorship of younger journalists in the field.
Zakrzewski was posthumously awarded the 2022 George Polk Award in Television Reporting for his team's coverage from Ukraine. His death underscored the extreme risks journalists face while documenting war, contributing to ongoing advocacy for press safety in conflict zones.
