Ahmad Abu Hussein
Ahmad Abu Hussein was a Palestinian journalist for Radio Voice of the People. He was shot and killed in Gaza on April 25, 2018.
Their Story
Ahmad Abu Hussein worked as a journalist for Radio Voice of the People, a community station in Gaza. He was covering events in the Gaza Strip, where he lived, in the months preceding his death.
On April 25, 2018, Abu Hussein was shot in the head while covering protests near the Israel-Gaza perimeter fence east of Gaza City. He was reportedly wearing a blue vest marked 'PRESS' at the time. He was transported to Al-Shifa Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting occurred during the 'Great March of Return' protests, a series of weekly demonstrations that began in March 2018. The protests, which called for the right of return for Palestinian refugees and an end to the Israeli-Egyptian blockade of Gaza, were frequently met with live fire from Israeli forces. According to the United Nations, over 180 Palestinians were killed and thousands injured by Israeli forces during the protests in 2018 and 2019.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) documented his death and stated it was directly related to his work. The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate condemned the killing and called for an international investigation. The Israeli military stated it was reviewing the incident but did not publicly release findings.
Abu Hussein's name is listed on memorials for journalists killed in the line of duty, including by the CPJ and Reporters Without Borders. His death is cited in reports on the dangers faced by media workers covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
