Their Story
Steven Francis Shapiro was a 29-year-old from Hidden Valley, California. He served as a Private First Class with Company D, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Advise and Assist Brigade, based at Fort Hood, Texas.
On October 21, 2011, PFC Shapiro died from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device in Tallil, Iraq, according to a U.S. Department of Defense news release. He was the only U.S. service member killed in the incident.
Shapiro died during Operation New Dawn, the U.S. military mission in Iraq from September 2010 to December 2011. This phase followed Operation Iraqi Freedom and was defined by a formal transition from combat operations to a role focused on advising and assisting Iraqi security forces.
His death was reported by several news outlets, including the Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times. The Department of Defense officially announced his death on October 24, 2011.
