Senior Airman James Arthur Hansen, 25, of Athens, Michigan, was a U.S. Air Force airman assigned to the 46th Operations Support Squadron. He was killed in action on September 15, 2010, at Joint Base Balad, Iraq.
Their Story
Senior Airman James Arthur Hansen was from Athens, Michigan. He was 25 years old and served in the U.S. Air Force, assigned to the 46th Operations Support Squadron out of Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.
On September 15, 2010, Hansen died from wounds sustained in an indirect fire attack on Joint Base Balad, a major U.S. air base north of Baghdad. The Department of Defense confirmed he was killed in action. Another service member was reportedly wounded in the same incident.
Hansen?s death occurred during Operation New Dawn, the U.S. military mission that succeeded Operation Iraqi Freedom. The operation, which began on September 1, 2010, officially marked the transition from combat operations to an advise-and-assist role for the remaining U.S. forces in Iraq.
Following his death, Hansen?s body was returned to the United States. His funeral was held at the Athens Baptist Church in Michigan. The Air Force posthumously awarded him the Purple Heart and the Air Force Combat Action Medal.
Hansen is memorialized on the Michigan Remembers website and at the Athens Area Veterans Memorial. His name is included on the roster of U.S. service members who died during Operation New Dawn.
