Staff Sergeant Phillip Chad Jenkins was a 26-year-old soldier from Decatur, Indiana. He served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Advise and Assist Brigade, based at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. He was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn.
Jenkins died on September 7, 2010, in Balad, north of Baghdad. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on a mounted patrol. The incident occurred during a period of heightened insurgent activity targeting U.S. forces.
His death came one week after the official start of Operation New Dawn on September 1, 2010. This phase of the Iraq War marked the declared end of U.S. combat operations and a transition to an advise-and-assist mission for the remaining American troops. Hostile engagements with insurgent groups continued throughout this period.
The Army posthumously awarded Jenkins the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His body was returned to Indiana, where he was buried in the Decatur Cemetery. Local news reported that hundreds of community members lined the streets during the funeral procession.
Jenkins is remembered on memorials in his hometown and by his unit. His name is inscribed on the Global War on Terrorism memorial at Schofield Barracks. The 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment continues to honor its fallen soldiers from all conflicts.
