Sergeant Robert Gregory Tenney Jr. was a 29-year-old soldier from Warner Robins, Georgia. He served with Troop G, 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, based at Fort Hood, Texas.

On June 29, 2011, Tenney died in Al Kut, Wasit Province, southeast of Baghdad. The Department of Defense stated his death resulted from hostile enemy action, though specific details of the incident were not widely reported in public releases.

Tenney's death occurred during Operation New Dawn, the successor mission to Operation Iraqi Freedom. This phase, which began in September 2010, formally marked the end of U.S. combat operations and focused on advising and assisting Iraqi security forces ahead of a full withdrawal.
