U.S. Army Sergeant Steven L. Talamantez, 34, of Laredo, Texas, was killed in a hostile incident in Al Amarah, Iraq, on July 10, 2011.

Their Story

Steven L. Talamantez was a 34-year-old sergeant from Laredo, Texas. He served with Company C, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, part of the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Hood, Texas.

On July 10, 2011, Sgt. Talamantez was killed in Al Amarah, a city in Iraq's Maysan province. The U.S. Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile fire. He was the first American service member reported killed in Iraq that month.

Talamantez died during Operation New Dawn, the final phase of the U.S. military mission in Iraq that began in September 2010. The operation, which succeeded Operation Iraqi Freedom, formally concluded with the withdrawal of U.S. forces in December 2011.

Following his death, the Army posthumously awarded Talamantez the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His body was returned to Texas for burial.

He is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial and by his unit. His death occurred as U.S. forces were preparing to end their combat role in Iraq.
