Their Story

Glenn Michael Sewell was a 23-year-old from Live Oak, Texas. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, assigned to Troop C, 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas.

According to the Department of Defense, Sewell died on June 13, 2011, in Al Kut, Iraq, from wounds sustained in a hostile incident. Reports from the time indicate his unit was involved in a mission to train and advise Iraqi security forces when the attack occurred.

Sewell's death took place during Operation New Dawn, the U.S. military's post-combat mission in Iraq that began on September 1, 2010. The operation focused on stability operations and advising Iraqi forces as U.S. combat troops withdrew. The period saw continued insurgent attacks against remaining U.S. personnel and Iraqi targets.

His death was reported by national and local Texas media. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He was buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Sewell is remembered on memorial walls at Fort Hood and within veterans' communities. His name is inscribed on the 1st Cavalry Division's memorial at the National Museum of the United States Army.
