Their Story
Gary Lee Nelson III was a 20-year-old soldier from Woodstock, Georgia. He served as an Active Duty Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Troop C, 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
On April 5, 2011, Specialist Nelson was killed in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. According to the Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained from enemy small-arms fire while on a mounted patrol.
His death occurred during Operation New Dawn, the successor mission to Operation Iraqi Freedom. The operation, which began in September 2010, formally marked the end of U.S. combat operations and a transition to an advisory and assistance role for Iraqi security forces ahead of a full withdrawal.
Nelson's death was reported by several national news outlets. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. He was survived by his parents and siblings.
He was buried with military honors at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton. His name is inscribed on the Iraq War Memorial at Veterans Memorial Park in Woodstock.
