Their Story

Martin James Lamar was a 43-year-old U.S. Army sergeant from Sacramento, California. He was assigned to Troop A, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas, at the time of his deployment to Iraq.

On January 15, 2011, Sergeant Lamar died in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. The Department of Defense announced he was killed by hostile fire. According to subsequent reports, he was killed by small arms fire while on a mounted patrol.

Lamar's death occurred during Operation New Dawn, the successor mission to Operation Iraqi Freedom. The operation, which began in September 2010, marked the formal end of U.S. combat operations and a transition to an advise-and-assist role for the remaining American forces supporting Iraqi troops.

The Army posthumously awarded Sergeant Lamar the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He was survived by his wife and children. His death was reported by several major news outlets as one of the final U.S. combat fatalities in Iraq before the troop withdrawal.

Sergeant Lamar is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial and other veteran remembrance sites. His unit, the 9th Cavalry Regiment, has a long history dating back to the 19th century.
