Dylan Jeffrey Johnson was a 20-year-old soldier from Tulsa, Oklahoma. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Troop C, 4th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Hood, Texas.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Specialist Johnson died on June 26, 2011, in Jalula, Iraq, from wounds sustained in a hostile incident. The official release stated his death was the result of enemy small-arms fire. Jalula is a city in Iraq's Diyala province, an area that saw continued insurgent activity during the period.
Johnson's death occurred during Operation New Dawn, the U.S. military mission that succeeded Operation Iraqi Freedom. The operation, which began on September 1, 2010, formally marked the end of U.S. combat operations and a transition to an advise-and-assist role for Iraqi security forces. U.S. forces remained engaged in security operations and were still targeted by insurgent groups.
Following his death, the Department of Defense issued a formal casualty announcement on June 28, 2011. His body was returned to the United States. Public records indicate memorial services were held in Oklahoma.
