U.S. Army Sergeant Matthew Ryan Gallagher, 22, of North Falmouth, Massachusetts, was killed in action on June 26, 2011, in Numaniyah, Iraq, during Operation New Dawn.

Their Story

Matthew Ryan Gallagher was born in 1989 and grew up in North Falmouth, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the United States Army and served as a sergeant assigned to Troop A, 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Hood, Texas.

On June 26, 2011, Gallagher was killed in Numaniyah, Iraq, a city in Wasit Province southeast of Baghdad. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.

Gallagher's death occurred during Operation New Dawn, the final phase of the U.S. military mission in Iraq that began on September 1, 2010. The operation followed the official end of U.S. combat operations and focused on advising and assisting Iraqi security forces. The period saw continued insurgent attacks against remaining U.S. troops and Iraqi targets.

Gallagher's death was reported by the Department of Defense on June 28, 2011. His name was entered into the Defense Casualty Analysis System. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

Gallagher is remembered by family and in his community. A foundation was reportedly established in his name to support veterans and their families. He is interred at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
