David Dustin Finch was from Bath Springs, Tennessee. He served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, based at Fort Hood, Texas.

Finch died on December 8, 2010, in Al Kut, the capital of Iraq's Wasit province. According to the Department of Defense, his death resulted from hostile action. No further details about the specific incident were publicly released by the military.

His death occurred during Operation New Dawn, the successor mission to Operation Iraqi Freedom. The operation, which began on September 1, 2010, formally shifted the U.S. military role from combat to advising and assisting Iraqi security forces. American casualties continued during this transition period.
