Vincent Anthony Filpi III was a 41-year-old Petty Officer First Class from Niceville, Florida. He was a sailor assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65). According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was deployed in support of Operation New Dawn.

Filpi was killed in action on March 22, 2011, in Iraq's Salah ad Din province, north of Baghdad. The Pentagon stated he died of wounds sustained from an enemy attack. He was reportedly part of a unit training Iraqi police forces when the incident occurred.

Operation New Dawn was the final phase of the U.S. military mission in Iraq, lasting from September 1, 2010, to December 18, 2011. It followed Operation Iraqi Freedom and was defined as an advise-and-assist mission, with U.S. troops working alongside Iraqi security forces. Filpi was one of 66 American service members who died during this operation.

His death was announced by the Department of Defense. The USS Enterprise, his assigned ship, was deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations at the time, which includes the Persian Gulf and the broader Middle East region.
