Lashawn Donell Evans was born in Columbia, South Carolina. He served as an active-duty soldier in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company E, 1st Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment, Combat Aviation Brigade, based at Fort Riley, Kansas.

Sergeant Evans died on February 15, 2011, in Taji, north of Baghdad. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on a mounted patrol. He was 24 years old.

His death occurred during Operation New Dawn, the final phase of the U.S. military mission in Iraq following the Iraq War. The operation, which began on September 1, 2010, focused on advising and assisting Iraqi security forces as U.S. combat troops withdrew.

Evans was one of 66 American service members killed during Operation New Dawn. His death was reported by national news outlets, including The Washington Post, which listed his name among the war dead.
