U.S. Army Specialist Daniel Lucas Elliott, 21, of Youngsville, North Carolina, died on July 15, 2011, in Basrah, Iraq, during Operation New Dawn.
Their Story
Daniel Lucas Elliott was a 21-year-old from Youngsville, North Carolina. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army Reserve with the 805th Military Police Company, 535th Military Police Battalion, 290th Military Police Brigade, based in Cary, North Carolina.
On July 15, 2011, Elliott died in Basrah, Iraq. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile action. He was one of two U.S. soldiers killed in a rocket attack on Contingency Operating Base Basra that day.
Elliott died during Operation New Dawn, the final phase of the U.S. military mission in Iraq that lasted from September 2010 to December 2011. The operation followed the end of major combat operations and focused on advising and assisting Iraqi security forces.
Following his death, Elliott's body was returned to North Carolina. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Youngsville.
Elliott is remembered by family and fellow soldiers. His name is inscribed on the North Carolina Veterans Memorial and is listed on the Iraq War Memorial in Washington, D.C.
