Michael Benjamin Cook Jr. was a 27-year-old soldier from Middletown, Ohio. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Battery B, 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Riley, Kansas.
According to the Department of Defense, Cook died on June 6, 2011, in Baghdad, Iraq, from wounds sustained in a hostile incident. The specific attack was reported by the Associated Press as a rocket strike on the International Zone, also known as the Green Zone, in the Iraqi capital.
Cook's death occurred during Operation New Dawn, the final phase of the U.S. military mission in Iraq. The operation, which succeeded Operation Iraqi Freedom, began in September 2010 and was focused on advising and assisting Iraqi security forces as U.S. combat troops withdrew.
