Their Story

Mark Adams Cofield was a 25-year-old sergeant from Colorado Springs, Colorado. He served with the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, XVIII Airborne Corps, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The XVIII Airborne Corps is a strategic command element, and soldiers assigned to its headquarters battalion provide critical support functions for deployed operations.

On July 17, 2011, Sergeant Cofield was killed in Baghdad. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained from enemy small-arms fire. The incident occurred in the Iraqi capital, where U.S. forces continued to advise and assist Iraqi security forces.

Cofield's death took place during Operation New Dawn, the final phase of the U.S. military mission in Iraq that began in September 2010. This period followed the official end of major combat operations and focused on training, advising, and supporting Iraqi forces. U.S. troop levels were drawn down significantly, but combat-related casualties continued.

The Department of Defense announced his death in a press release on July 19, 2011. He was posthumously promoted from the rank of specialist to sergeant. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.

Sergeant Cofield's name is inscribed on the Iraq War Memorial at the Colorado Veterans Monument in Colorado Springs. He is also memorialized on Panel 4W, Row 111 of the Iraq War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Broomfield, Colorado.
