Staff Sgt. Jose Miguel Cintron Rosado, 38, of Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, was a U.S. Army engineer killed in Taji, Iraq, on January 2, 2011.
Their Story
Jose Miguel Cintron Rosado was a 38-year-old staff sergeant from Vega Alta, Puerto Rico. He served with the 1013th Engineer (Sapper) Company, 130th Engineer Battalion, part of the Puerto Rico Army National Guard based in Aguadilla.
On January 2, 2011, Cintron Rosado was killed in Taji, north of Baghdad, while supporting Operation New Dawn. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained from enemy small-arms fire during an operation.
His death occurred during Operation New Dawn, the U.S. military's post-combat mission in Iraq that began in September 2010. The operation focused on advising and assisting Iraqi security forces as U.S. troop levels drew down.
Cintron Rosado's body was returned to Puerto Rico, where he was honored in a ceremony at the Mu?iz Air National Guard Base. The governor of Puerto Rico ordered flags flown at half-staff in his memory.
He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Puerto Rico Veterans Memorial in San Juan.
