Their Story
Emilio Jaime Campo Jr. was a 20-year-old soldier from Madelia, Minnesota. He served as a Specialist with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Riley, Kansas.
Campo died on June 6, 2011, in Baghdad. According to the Department of Defense, he was one of five U.S. soldiers killed when insurgents attacked their unit with indirect fire, a term for mortar or rocket attacks, at a base in the Iraqi capital.
His death occurred during Operation New Dawn, the final phase of the U.S. military mission in Iraq. The operation, which succeeded Operation Iraqi Freedom, formally began in September 2010 and focused on advising and assisting Iraqi security forces as U.S. combat troops withdrew.
Campo's body was returned to Minnesota. A funeral service was held in Madelia, where he was remembered by family and community members. The Department of Defense officially announced his death on June 8, 2011.
He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. Campo is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial in Orting, Washington, and in the 1st Infantry Division's memorial at Fort Riley.
