Their Story
Matthew James Bergman was a 21-year-old Petty Officer Second Class from Franklin, Tennessee. He was assigned to Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) at Fort Gordon, Georgia, but was temporarily attached to the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD-4) for his deployment to Iraq.
On July 26, 2011, Bergman was killed in action in Iraq. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained in a hostile incident. The specific location and details of the engagement were not publicly released by the military.
Bergman's death occurred during Operation New Dawn, the final phase of the U.S. military mission in Iraq that began in September 2010. The operation, which succeeded Operation Iraqi Freedom, focused on advising and assisting Iraqi security forces as U.S. combat troops withdrew. Hostile engagements continued throughout this period.
The Department of Defense announced Bergman's death on July 28, 2011. He was the 66th and final U.S. service member to die in Operation New Dawn. His body was returned to the United States for burial.
