Staff Sergeant Nicholas Price Bellard was a 26-year-old soldier from El Paso, Texas. He served with Troop C, 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Hood, Texas.
According to the Department of Defense, Bellard died on June 13, 2011, in Al Kut, the capital of Iraq's Wasit Province. The official casualty report listed his death as the result of hostile action. No further specifics regarding the incident were publicly released by the military.
Bellard's death occurred during Operation New Dawn, the final phase of the U.S. military mission in Iraq. The operation, which succeeded Operation Iraqi Freedom, formally began in September 2010 and focused on advising and assisting Iraqi security forces.
