Clifford Earl Beattie was a 37-year-old sergeant first class from Medical Lake, Washington. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 63rd Armor Regiment, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Riley, Kansas.

On May 22, 2011, Beattie died in Baghdad, Iraq. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his death resulted from hostile action. No further specifics regarding the incident were publicly released.

Beattie's death occurred during Operation New Dawn, the final phase of the U.S. military mission in Iraq that succeeded Operation Iraqi Freedom. The operation, which began in September 2010, focused on advising and assisting Iraqi security forces as U.S. combat troops withdrew.
