Their Story

Michael Patrick Bartley was a 23-year-old U.S. Army sergeant from the small community of Barnhill, Illinois. He served with Troop A, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Hood, Texas.

On January 15, 2011, Sergeant Bartley died in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. According to the Department of Defense, insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was reportedly on a mounted patrol when the explosion occurred.
