“Assalamu alaikum.”

The beautiful young lady repeated her greeting while frowning slightly, and even that expression made her face more attractive. She was extremely fair, almost like someone of mixed Arabian beauty, with a reddish glow hidden beneath her bright complexion.

“Is there nobody in this house? I keep greeting, and if I enter now they will say they didn’t hear me. Honestly, I’m going in. I’m tired of opening my mouth until it has started hurting.”

Sofiyyah Returns Home

A woman came out from a corner holding a kettle, clearly coming from the bathroom.

“I was in the bathroom when I heard you. I knew only Sofiyyah could enter the house shouting like this.”

The young lady twisted her face again and complained:

“Wayyo Allah, Mama! You were the one who told me not to enter the house without greeting properly. Now I greeted, and you still say I’m making noise. Yasmeen is always the one who does everything right. I came back and you didn’t even say welcome. I’m hungry, thirsty, and tired. You could have said, ‘Fiyah, why are you late today?’ But instead, you started scolding me.”

She kept complaining as she walked toward their room.

Her mother smiled and followed her.

“May Allah guide you. You will never change, Fiyah.”

Then she entered the room behind her and asked:

“Alright, my lady of the house, what delayed you today? Were the lectures too much?”

Sofiyyah began removing her clothes while pouting her small mouth like a bird.

“Mama, we finished early today. I was even happy that I would come home and attend Islamiyya. But when we reached the road near Central Park leading toward Alfah Store Shopping Mall, traffic held us for almost one hour.”

She continued:

“Someone had an accident there, but people had already helped him. That was why I came home late.”

At that moment, she remained only in her underwear while still talking endlessly to her mother.

She moved closer and said:

“Mama, please help me unhook it.”

Her mother shook her head while helping her and said:

“You have never changed, Fiyah. A grown-up girl like you, yet Yasmeen or I must still help you unhook your bra every day. Honestly, I don’t blame Yasmeen when she laughs at you.”

Sofiyyah pouted again while muttering under her breath.

Her mother then said:

“Let me go and check the soup before it burns. You’ve distracted me enough.”

She left the room, while Sofiyyah wrapped herself with a small towel and entered the bathroom inside the room.

That was Fiyah, a beautiful twenty-year-old young woman.

At the Hospital

“Doctor, you called me here, yet you are busy writing. I’m anxious to know my brother’s condition.”

The doctor dropped the pen in his hand and said:

“Sorry, my friend. What is your name again?”

“Malik,” he answered shortly.

The doctor nodded.

“Nice name. Please be patient, Malik. I’m writing down some medicines because I think the previous ones may not work well for him.”

Malik rubbed his head and released a heavy breath.

“That is not what I asked you. I asked about his condition. That is what I need to hear from you.”

Alfah’s Condition

The doctor sighed before saying:

“Calm down. He has regained consciousness. We stitched the wounds he sustained, and we also managed to stop the bleeding from the affected vein. Right now, he is receiving blood.”

The doctor paused for a moment, then looked at Malik again.

“But how could you allow your brother to drink alcohol like that? And not just any alcohol, but one of the strongest types.”

Malik lowered his head, feeling deep pain in his heart.

What could he tell the doctor?

Should he say he already knew Alfah drank heavily?

Or should he admit that he had no power to stop Alfah from doing whatever he wanted?

Even before, he could not control him. Now that Alfah had become more unstable, it had become even harder. Malik knew that once Alfah woke up and realized he was in the hospital, trouble would surely follow.

The Doctor’s Warning

The doctor looked at Malik with anger on his face.

“What are you trying to tell me? That is not an excuse. Where are his parents? Where is his mother? If you know the condition their son is in and you refuse to inform them, then you have betrayed them.”

He continued:

“Allah will hold you accountable because you know the state he is in and still kept quiet. Look at him now. The damage has already started. He was lucky this did not kill him.”

The doctor handed Malik a prescription and asked him to buy the medicine outside because the hospital did not have it available.

Malik’s Fear

Malik left the room filled with deep thoughts.

“Oh Malik, what can I do with Alfah? How can I force him to stop drinking? I don’t even have the courage to advise him properly.”

He kept thinking:

“Prayer is the only solution. I cannot even go near Maitama Estate now. Who gave birth to me that I would have the courage to enter Alhaji Mainah’s house and tell them their son is in trouble? I might spend the rest of my life in prison.”

He sighed deeply.

“All I can do is pray for Alfah. May Allah bring someone into his life who will help him and rescue him from this dark life.”
