Syed Saleem Shahzad

Syed Saleem Shahzad was a senior correspondent and Pakistan bureau chief for the Hong Kong-based Asia Times Online. He specialized in reporting on militancy, intelligence agencies, and the intersection of security and politics. His work was known for its depth and access to sensitive sources.

Shahzad left his home in Islamabad on May 29, 2011, to appear on a television talk show in the capital. He never arrived. His body was found on May 31 in a canal near Mandi Bahauddin, a district in Punjab province, about 150 kilometers southeast of Islamabad. A post-mortem examination indicated he had been tortured before his death.

His killing occurred amid a period of intense violence and instability in Pakistan, where journalists covering militant groups, the military, and intelligence services faced severe risks. Shahzad had recently published a report alleging infiltration by al-Qaeda sympathizers within the Pakistani navy, which followed a militant attack on a naval base in Karachi.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and Human Rights Watch stated his death was linked to his reporting. A UN human rights investigator called for an independent inquiry. In 2015, a Pakistani judicial commission concluded that the country's main intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), was responsible for his abduction and murder. The ISI denied the allegation.

Shahzad's death highlighted the extreme dangers faced by investigative journalists in Pakistan. He is remembered as a dogged reporter whose work continues to be cited in analyses of Pakistani security dynamics. No individual has been criminally convicted for his murder.
