Paul Klebnikov was an American investigative journalist and the founding editor of Forbes Russia. He was shot and killed in Moscow on July 9, 2004.

Their Story

Paul Klebnikov was a 41-year-old American journalist of Russian descent, known for his investigative work on post-Soviet oligarchs and corruption. A Harvard graduate and senior editor at Forbes magazine, he authored the book 'Godfather of the Kremlin: Boris Berezovsky and the Looting of Russia' and relocated to Moscow in 2004 to launch the Russian edition of Forbes.

On the evening of July 9, 2004, Klebnikov was leaving his office on Ulitsa Dokukina in Moscow. As he walked toward a nearby metro station, assailants in a passing car fired at least nine shots from a pistol. He was hit four times in the back and chest. Colleagues drove him to a hospital, where he died shortly after arrival.

Klebnikov's killing occurred during a period of heightened danger for journalists in Russia, particularly those investigating corruption, organized crime, and the conflicts in Chechnya. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 13 journalists were murdered in Russia in contract-style killings between 2000 and 2006, with few cases resulting in convictions.

The investigation into his murder led to multiple trials. In 2006, two Chechen men were acquitted. A second trial in 2007 ended with convictions for three other men, but they were later acquitted on appeal. In 2021, U.S. authorities charged a former Chechen militia commander, Magomed Dukuzov, in absentia, alleging he was one of the gunmen. The mastermind and motive remain officially unresolved.

Klebnikov is remembered as a dedicated investigator whose work exposed powerful interests. The Paul Klebnikov Fund was established to support investigative journalism in Russia. His death underscored the extreme risks faced by journalists working in the country.
