Wali Khan Babar
Wali Khan Babar was a Pakistani journalist for Geo TV. He was shot and killed in Karachi on January 13, 2011.
Their Story
Wali Khan Babar, a 28-year-old reporter, worked for Geo News, Pakistan's largest private television network. He was based in Karachi, where he covered crime, politics, and ethnic tensions for the channel's Sindhi-language service.
On the evening of January 13, 2011, Babar was driving home in the Liaquatabad area of Karachi. According to police reports, unidentified gunmen on motorcycles intercepted his car and opened fire. He was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene.
His killing occurred against a backdrop of significant violence against media workers in Pakistan. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) documented Pakistan as one of the world's deadliest countries for journalists during that period, with reporters facing threats from militant groups, political parties, and state agencies.
The murder prompted immediate outcry from national and international press freedom organizations. Geo News suspended its broadcasts for 15 minutes in protest. Police launched an investigation, and several suspects were reportedly arrested in the following years, though convictions related to the murder remained elusive.
Babar's death is often cited in reports on impunity in attacks against journalists. His case became a symbol of the dangers faced by local reporters covering sensitive issues in Pakistan's largest city.
