Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Lee Robinson, 36, of Brandon, Mississippi, was a U.S. Army National Guard soldier assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group. He died on March 25, 2006, in the Sanguin District of Afghanistan.

Their Story

Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Lee Robinson deployed to Afghanistan as part of the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force. He was a member of the Mississippi Army National Guard's 20th Special Forces Group, a unit with a long history of conducting unconventional warfare missions.

By March 2006, Operation Enduring Freedom was in its fifth year. The Taliban insurgency had regrouped, and the eastern and southern provinces of Afghanistan, including Helmand where Sanguin is located, saw intense guerrilla warfare. Improvised explosive devices and ambushes became frequent hazards for coalition forces.

On March 25, 2006, Robinson was on a mission in Sanguin District, Helmand Province. The district was a known Taliban stronghold and a focal point for military operations that spring. During the mission, his unit encountered hostile forces.

Robinson was killed in the ensuing engagement. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death several days later, confirming he died from wounds sustained during combat operations. He was 36 years old.

His service included deployments not only to Afghanistan but also to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa as part of the global counterterrorism effort. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

Robinson's death was one of more than 300 U.S. service member fatalities in Afghanistan that year, reflecting a significant escalation in violence. He is remembered in his hometown of Brandon, Mississippi, where he was buried.
