U.S. Army Specialist Jonn Joseph Edmunds, 20, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, was killed in action in Afghanistan on October 20, 2001. He served with Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.

Their Story

Jonn Joseph Edmunds was a 20-year-old soldier from Cheyenne, Wyoming. He enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned as a Specialist to Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, based at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Edmunds was killed on October 20, 2001, when the MH-47 Chinook helicopter he was aboard crashed in Pakistan, near the Afghan border. The aircraft, call sign "Stallion 71," was on a night mission in support of a raid on a Taliban compound when it reportedly encountered mechanical failure and went down. All seven U.S. service members on board, including Edmunds, died in the crash.

Edmunds's death occurred during the opening phase of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. The operation began on October 7, 2001, following the September 11 attacks, with the stated objective of dismantling the al-Qaeda terrorist network and removing the Taliban regime from power.

According to military statements, the crash was not the result of hostile fire. Edmunds and the six other soldiers killed were the first American combat fatalities of Operation Enduring Freedom. The Department of Defense officially announced their deaths on October 22, 2001.

Specialist Edmunds was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia, and he is listed on Panel 1R, Line 12 of the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars Memorial at the Pentagon.
