John Andrew Quinlan, 36, was a Chief Warrant Officer 3 from Clarksville, Tennessee, serving with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 160th Aviation Regiment. He was killed in action on February 18, 2007, in Qalat, Afghanistan.

Their Story

John Andrew Quinlan was a 36-year-old Army aviator from Clarksville, Tennessee. He served as a Chief Warrant Officer 3 with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

On February 18, 2007, Quinlan was killed in Qalat, the capital of Zabul province in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when his helicopter came under enemy fire during combat operations.

Quinlan's death occurred during a period of Operation Enduring Freedom marked by a resurgent Taliban. The year 2007 saw a significant increase in violence, with improvised explosive device (IED) attacks and direct engagements rising sharply from previous years. Coalition forces conducted frequent air and ground operations across the country's southern and eastern regions.

The Pentagon announced his death on February 20, 2007. He was survived by his wife and children. Quinlan was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Air Medal with Valor device for his actions.

Quinlan is memorialized on the 160th SOAR(A) memorial wall at Fort Campbell. His unit, the 'Night Stalkers,' is a special operations aviation regiment known for conducting high-risk missions, often under night or adverse conditions.
