Pierre Billaud was a French journalist for RTL radio. He was killed in an ambush on November 11, 2001, in Kunduz, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Pierre Billaud was a correspondent for the French commercial radio network RTL. He was part of a small team of journalists traveling in northern Afghanistan in November 2001, reporting on the U.S.-led military campaign that followed the September 11 attacks.

On November 11, 2001, Billaud was traveling in a convoy with other journalists and members of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance near the city of Kunduz. According to reports from the Committee to Protect Journalists and other news organizations, the convoy was ambushed by unidentified gunmen. Billaud was shot and killed in the attack.

The ambush occurred during the opening phase of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The objective was to dismantle the Taliban regime and al-Qaeda. Kunduz was a major Taliban stronghold in the north and the scene of intense fighting between Taliban forces and the Northern Alliance, supported by U.S. air power.

The Committee to Protect Journalists confirmed Billaud's death as work-related. His death was reported by international news agencies, including Agence France-Presse and the Associated Press. RTL and the French foreign ministry acknowledged the loss of their correspondent.

Pierre Billaud is listed on memorials for journalists killed in the line of duty. His death, one of the first among international correspondents covering the new war in Afghanistan, underscored the extreme risks faced by reporters in conflict zones where front lines are fluid and combatants are numerous.
