Maria Grazia Cutuli was an Italian journalist for Corriere della Sera. She was killed on November 19, 2001, in an ambush near Sarobi, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Maria Grazia Cutuli was a 39-year-old foreign correspondent for the Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera. She had reported from conflict zones including East Timor and Chechnya before traveling to Afghanistan in late 2001 to cover the U.S.-led invasion following the September 11 attacks.

On November 19, 2001, Cutuli was traveling in a convoy of journalists from Jalalabad toward Kabul. The group, which included three other foreign journalists, was ambushed by armed men on a mountain road near the town of Sarobi, east of Kabul. According to reports, the attackers emerged from a checkpoint and opened fire on the vehicles.

The ambush occurred during the opening phase of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign to oust the Taliban regime and dismantle al-Qaeda. The period was marked by fluid front lines, widespread lawlessness, and significant danger for journalists operating outside major cities.

The killings prompted immediate condemnation from media organizations and the Italian government. An investigation was launched, but the specific perpetrators were not conclusively identified. Some reports later suggested the attack may have been carried out by bandits or Taliban-aligned fighters.

Cutuli is remembered as a dedicated war correspondent. The Maria Grazia Cutuli International Journalism Award was established in her memory to honor journalists working in dangerous conditions. Her death is recorded by the Committee to Protect Journalists as a confirmed work-related killing.
