Julio Fuentes was a Spanish journalist for El Mundo. He was killed in an ambush on November 19, 2001, near Sarobi, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Julio Fuentes was a veteran correspondent for the Spanish daily newspaper El Mundo. He had built a career reporting from conflict zones, including the Balkans, and was dispatched to Afghanistan following the U.S.-led invasion in October 2001.

On November 19, 2001, Fuentes was traveling in a convoy of journalists from Jalalabad toward Kabul. Near the town of Sarobi, the convoy was ambushed by unidentified gunmen. Fuentes, along with Italian journalist Maria Grazia Cutuli and two Afghan colleagues, was shot and killed at the scene.

The ambush occurred during the opening phase of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign to oust the Taliban regime following the September 11 attacks. The road between Jalalabad and Kabul was a known danger zone, with reports of banditry and factional fighting between Taliban remnants and advancing Northern Alliance forces.

The killings were condemned by media organizations and governments. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) documented the deaths as work-related murders. An investigation by the Spanish government reportedly concluded the attack was carried out by a criminal gang, not a targeted political assassination.

Fuentes is remembered as part of a group of journalists killed in Afghanistan in late 2001, a period of extreme peril for reporters. His death underscored the risks faced by journalists covering the early, chaotic stages of the conflict.
