Johanne Sutton
Johanne Sutton was a French radio journalist for RFI and RTL. She was killed on November 11, 2001, in an ambush near Kunduz, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Johanne Sutton was a 34-year-old journalist working for the French radio stations Radio France Internationale (RFI) and RTL. She had previously reported from conflict zones including Kosovo and Sierra Leone before arriving in Afghanistan in late 2001 to cover the U.S.-led military intervention following the September 11 attacks.
On November 11, 2001, Sutton was traveling with two other European journalists—Pierre Billaud of RTL and Volker Handloik of Stern magazine—in a convoy of Northern Alliance fighters. Their vehicle was ambushed by Taliban forces near the village of Khanabad, on the road to the strategic city of Kunduz. According to reports from the Committee to Protect Journalists and other news agencies, all three journalists were shot and killed in the attack.
Sutton was killed during the opening phase of the war in Afghanistan, which began in October 2001. The operation aimed to dismantle the Taliban regime and al-Qaeda following the 9/11 attacks. The ambush occurred as Northern Alliance forces, backed by U.S. air power, advanced on the Taliban's northern stronghold of Kunduz.
The deaths of Sutton, Billaud, and Handloik were widely reported in European media. French President Jacques Chirac expressed his condolences, stating the journalists had died 'in the exercise of their mission of information.' Their bodies were repatriated to their home countries.
Johanne Sutton is remembered as part of a group of journalists killed in the early weeks of the Afghanistan war. The Committee to Protect Journalists documented her death as work-related, and she is listed on memorials for journalists killed in conflict.
