Montrond, Alberto Dasilveira
Sgt. Alberto Dasilveira Montrond, 27, of Suffolk, Massachusetts, was a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier. He died in Deh Rawod, Afghanistan, on February 13, 2006.
Their Story
Alberto Dasilveira Montrond was a sergeant assigned to Company G, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The 7th Group's area of operations included Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On February 13, 2006, Montrond was killed during a patrol in Deh Rawod, a district in Afghanistan's Uruzgan province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit came under hostile small-arms fire. He was 27 years old.
Montrond's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2006, the mission had shifted from major combat operations to a focus on counterinsurgency and stabilization efforts, particularly in the country's southern provinces.
The Department of Defense announced his death the following day. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Meritorious Service Medal. His funeral was held in his hometown of Suffolk, Massachusetts.
His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the U.S. Army Special Operations Command Memorial Plaza at Fort Bragg. He is also listed on the Global War on Terrorism Memorial in Suffolk.
