Staff Sgt. Luis Manuel Melendez-Sanchez, 33, of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, was an airman assigned to the 1st Communications Squadron, Langley AFB, Virginia. He was killed in action in Afghanistan on February 17, 2006.
Their Story
Staff Sgt. Luis Manuel Melendez-Sanchez was a 33-year-old U.S. Air Force communications specialist from Bayamon, Puerto Rico. He was assigned to the 1st Communications Squadron based at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Melendez-Sanchez died on February 17, 2006, in Afghanistan. He was killed when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device while he was on patrol near Bagram Air Base.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation initially focused on Afghanistan and later expanded to other regions, including the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
Following his death, Melendez-Sanchez was posthumously promoted to the rank of staff sergeant. He was survived by his wife and children. A memorial service was held at Langley Air Force Base.
His name is inscribed on the Air Force Memorial and on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Puerto Rico National Cemetery. He is listed among the more than 2,400 U.S. service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
