U.S. Army Second Lieutenant Michael Everett McGahan, 23, of Orlando, Florida, was killed in Khogyani District, Afghanistan, on June 6, 2010.

Their Story

Second Lieutenant Michael Everett McGahan was a 23-year-old soldier from Orlando, Florida. He served with Company A, 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

On June 6, 2010, McGahan died from wounds sustained in Khogyani District, Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated the cause was a hostile incident involving an improvised explosive device. He was reportedly on a mounted patrol at the time.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2009, a surge of U.S. forces was deployed, with troops like McGahan's unit operating in volatile eastern provinces to counter insurgent networks.

McGahan was posthumously promoted from First Lieutenant to Captain. He was survived by his parents and a sister. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Captain McGahan's name is inscribed on the 101st Airborne Division Memorial Wall at Fort Campbell. He is also listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the University of Central Florida, where he was a student and a member of the Army ROTC program before commissioning.
