Their Story
Anthony Santos Lagman was a 26-year-old Staff Sergeant from Yonkers, New York. He served with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum, New York. The unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On March 18, 2004, Lagman was killed during a combat operation in the town of Deh Rawod, located in Afghanistan's Uruzgan Province. According to the Department of Defense, his death resulted from hostile enemy action. He was one of two American soldiers killed in the same engagement.
Lagman's death occurred during a period of intensified operations in southern Afghanistan. U.S. and allied forces were conducting missions to disrupt Taliban and anti-coalition militia activities in the region, which remained volatile nearly three years after the initial invasion.
The Department of Defense announced his death on March 20, 2004. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States.
