Adam Gareth Kinser was a 21-year-old from Rio Vista, California. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army Reserve's 304th Psychological Operations Company, based in Sacramento.
On January 29, 2004, Kinser was on patrol in Ghazni province, Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his unit was conducting a route clearance mission when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. He was killed in the blast.
Kinser died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2004, operations in provinces like Ghazni focused on stabilizing the country following the fall of the Taliban regime and countering a renewed insurgency.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in several California newspapers. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Adam Kinser is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the California State Capitol and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on Panel 18W, Line 112 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the California Veterans Memorial in Sacramento.
