Their Story

Jason Douglas Johns was a 19-year-old soldier from Frankton, Indiana. He served as a Private First Class with Echo Company, 3rd Battalion, 82nd Aviation Brigade, a unit specializing in helicopter support.

According to U.S. Department of Defense records, Johns died on February 21, 2007, at Bagram Air Field, the main U.S. military base in Afghanistan. The official casualty report listed his death as a result of enemy action, though specific details of the incident were not widely publicized.

Johns was deployed as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2007, the conflict was in its sixth year, marked by a significant Taliban insurgency and a major NATO troop surge.

His death was reported by local Indiana media, including The Herald Bulletin. The town of Frankton, with a population of fewer than 2,000 people at the time, marked the loss of one of its own.

PFC Johns is memorialized on the Indiana Fallen Heroes website and at the Madison County Veterans Memorial Park. His name is also inscribed on the Frankton Jr./Sr. High School veterans memorial.
