Their Story
Buddy James Hughie was a specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 180th Infantry Regiment, part of the Oklahoma Army National Guard. He was from Poteau, Oklahoma, and was 25 years old at the time of his death. According to military records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On February 19, 2007, Hughie was killed in Kamdesh, a district in Afghanistan's Nuristan province. The U.S. Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile fire. A contemporaneous report from the Associated Press stated that two U.S. soldiers died that day in eastern Afghanistan when their unit came under enemy small-arms fire during a combat operation.
Hughie's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2007, U.S. and NATO forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the country's eastern and southern regions where Taliban and other insurgent groups were active.
Following his death, Hughie was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His funeral was held in Poteau, Oklahoma, where he was remembered by family, friends, and fellow soldiers. The Oklahoma National Guard publicly honored his service.
Specialist Hughie is memorialized on the Oklahoma Veterans Memorial and the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Poteau Veterans Center. His name is also inscribed on Panel 62E, Line 28 of the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, which honors those killed in Afghanistan.
