Their Story

Joshua Lee Hill was a 24-year-old soldier from Fairmount, Indiana. He served as a Specialist with Company A, 391st Engineer Battalion, an Army Reserve unit based in Asheville, North Carolina. The battalion had been mobilized for Operation Enduring Freedom.

According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Hill died on March 12, 2006, in Asadabad, the capital of Afghanistan's Kunar Province. The official cause was listed as hostile fire. No further operational details of the incident were publicly released by the military.

Hill's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2006, U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in counterinsurgency operations, particularly in eastern provinces like Kunar, which bordered Pakistan.

Hill was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His death was reported by local and national news outlets in Indiana. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings.

He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Indiana War Memorial in Indianapolis and on online veterans' memorials. The 391st Engineer Battalion completed its deployment and returned to the United States later in 2006.
