U.S. Army Sergeant Anton Jesean Hiett, 25, of Mount Airy, North Carolina, was killed in a hostile incident in Asadabad, Afghanistan, on March 12, 2006.

Their Story

Anton Jesean Hiett was a sergeant in the United States Army, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 391st Engineer Battalion, based in Greenville, South Carolina. The 391st was a reserve unit. Hiett had deployed to multiple theaters with his unit, including the Philippines and the Horn of Africa, before his deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On March 12, 2006, Sergeant Hiett was killed in Asadabad, the capital of Kunar Province in eastern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from injuries sustained when his convoy encountered enemy small arms fire. The attack occurred during a combat patrol in a region known for insurgent activity.

Hiett's death occurred during a period of escalating violence in Afghanistan. By 2006, Taliban and other insurgent forces had regrouped, leading to a significant increase in attacks, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and direct fire ambushes against coalition forces. The eastern provinces, particularly Kunar, were focal points for this renewed fighting.

The Army announced Hiett's death in a press release on March 14, 2006. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to North Carolina, where he was buried with military honors.

Sergeant Hiett is memorialized on the 391st Engineer Battalion's roll of honor and on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Greenville, South Carolina. His name is also inscribed on Panel 6E, Line 120 of the Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Boston.
